Dismissing something experiential as "flashing lights" is rather silly. Do you think music needs characters and story to influence people? Of course not, because it's not a novel or a movie, it's its own medium. Games don't need to be movies, even though some get close
Additionally using Crash Bandicoot as a repeated example is a little silly. It'd be like me arguing films aren't meaningful because I felt no connection to the talking cars in the latest Transformers - they serve different purposes, simple entertainment versus deeper narrative

In that case I was using it to point out that just because you’re controlling a character that doesn’t mean you care about them, it’s silly to say that. Clearly characters & good writing are what makes you care about the decisions made in game or about characters on film.

I didn't mean to imply that control = deep connection always. But in narrative-focused games "being" a character, physically moving around a space, framing the scene yourself using your "camera" / perspective, maybe picking objects up - this definitely immerses and connects you
