I understand your anger, you’re clearly passionate about games, I’m not so fussed. The Last of Us was a great game, I really enjoyed it, but to imply it’s anything other than an interactive copy of George A Romero’s best work is to be wilfully blind.
Depends on the game. Interactivity absolutely deepens your connection with a character - you are leading them on a 20+ hour journey. And in many games you are explicitly the character and make narrative and mechanical choices for them. You're immersed as them in a world

Additionally using Crash Bandicoot as a repeated example is a little silly. It'd be like me arguing films aren't meaningful because I felt no connection to the talking cars in the latest Transformers - they serve different purposes, simple entertainment versus deeper narrative

In that case I was using it to point out that just because you’re controlling a character that doesn’t mean you care about them, it’s silly to say that. Clearly characters & good writing are what makes you care about the decisions made in game or about characters on film.
