He's pretty obviously talking about people who are celebrating a massive box office haul for a monopolistic media campaign as validation for their personal tastes in pop culture. There's literally no reason to track box office gross if you're not in the industry.
Things that are successful often beget sequels, and more things that are like the successful thing. So if you liked A Thing and it did well at the box office, you might think "oh cool, the likelihood of them making more of The Thing is higher". This is how I felt wrt Spider-Verse
