If you're working on making a specific part of a game, there's a different name for your job title other than "game developer". I think the term game developer isn't a term for a load of specific jobs, but instead a term for someone who has the skills to make a indie game.

I defo believe that people in non-obvious areas of game development can still say they worked on a game, but they're not a developer imo.

Anyone who contributes to the development of a game is a game developer. You don't need to write code. Literally, if you are part of a game's developement, you are a developer. Dev ~= programmerhttps://twitter.com/jenmacl/status/1096045284734382080 …

Jen MacLean @jenmaclAnyone who contributes to the making of a game in any way is a game developer. Marketing contributes to the making of a game. So does Community, QA, HR, BizDev, etc. People who pull the “you’re not a REAL game dev” crap baffle me. Why split the party? https://twitter.com/pkkaos/status/1095882860253179904 …1 reply 0 retweets 1 like -

I think it's fine as long as specialists don't identity as a game developer before their speciality.

But it does become harder to identify people with wider skillsets (without seeming arrogant) if the term game developer is an umbrella term.

when you meet industry professionals they'll give context like: "I'm a game artist", "I work in game marketing", or "I'm an indie developer". It's really only less professional scenes (MC, Roblox) and indie stuff where 'game developer' has this narrow definition

at the end of the day, it's pretty arbitrary and people have different definitions. but anyone who works on games is a dev, and can identify as such if they want. trying to put rigid breaks on the term is futile and it's always gonna require more context anyway so
