Like, I think this resonated with so many people including the victim because he didn't "need" to do this for his career. He had a successful career. He could have ignored it, or diminished it, or half-assed a couple tweets, but instead he went on his own podcast and admitted it

This. It is hard to believe someone’s sorry for something they did for ages as soon as they got caught. Just seems like a weird coincidence that consequences would be the thing to give them understanding and empathy, rather than force them to think of their own welfare more.
