We're just as bad for not calling it out. We're quick to have a moan at companies for not paying interns, but we're largely silent when it comes to event staff.

Absolutely. I've only realised this recently tbh, obviously not in all cases but many events wouldn't even be profitable if they had to pay for the work hours volunteers do. Volunteering isn't always bad but it's wide open to exploitation just like any form of labour

There's a degree of Stockholm syndrome with the volunteers too. Especially when the event business is framed as though it's a 'family'. I think you touched on this recently too.

Yeah I think I said something similar on the slack. Hiring "passionate" inexperienced people then indoctrinating them into a crunch-driven culture by redefining the team as a "family". Then they do the same to their subordinates, contractors and volunteers, reinforcing culture
