This is not meant as “keep trying,” either. I ejected from the dream completely, and followed a different passion in academia. Years later, making 12-15k a year as a TA, I started freelancing again and realized that my time AWAY from games had made me a much better writer.

I cannot underscore enough how important it is for writers to have a broad field of expertise and interest. Leaning into that is what transformed my work.

Not just writers, I think many creative disciplines benefit from this. We benefit from diversity of background, culture, personal identity, but also diversity of skills and experience too. I think the Waypoint team has many great examples of this
