Someone sent a DM asking why Spider-Man wasn't on my GOTY list, and that's a very fair question I kind of want to answer here. It is a great game - it's easy to forget that superhero games seem like an easy match with games, but those games seem incredibly difficult to get right.

I liked Spider-Man - story, traversal, and art-direction were great - but my main issue with the game was a mix of complexity of input & a reliance on UI in combat - both meant it didn't capture the fantasy of "Spidey combat" for me.

Combat gets a ton of stuff right - especially later on in the game there's a pretty fun possibility space in a lot of the encounters, and it can feel very nice to sort of clear a room with grace - but very often it feels a bit overwhelming to keep track of those opportunities?

It's one of my top 10, but I fully agree. I didn't end up using half the moves I had available and even as a fairly adept player I found myself forgetting all the verbs ("oh crap, I can throw things, oh I should use that move I unlocked, damn what's the counter to this?" etc)
