I don't believe a hole in a lighted place could be that dark that it litterally looks like the advanced darkness from spongebobpic.twitter.com/xLVXCDLQZW
It was painted with a pigment that absorbs most of the light, making it seem very very black. The same artist later went on to controversially secure exclusive rights to Vantablack, and even darker black pigment - apparently it looks like staring at a 2D fully black shape

It is a hole. The pigment used to paint the hole works in such a way as to trick the eye so that you cannot perceive the depth of it. Instead it /looks like/ a flat surface. The man was sent to the hospital for his injuries.
