If I'm doing hot takes this morning anyway: given that a game technically takes place in the players' head, not on a computer, a game doesn't start when you first boot it up, it has already started when you first learn of it.
"Ceci n'est pas une pipe". People's constructs and memories of a thing go far beyond the thing. Marketing and comms (including word of mouth) are a part of the product and should be treated as extensions of it, and where possible designed as such

I guess this is why I think of Zelda Link to the Past and Ocarina of Time as having these rich stories, but when I go back to them they’re surprisingly concise in that regard.
