I do want to say that as soon as you can afford to pay for it, you should pay for it. I haven't pirated a single piece of software (including games) since I first started earning money and set aside a personal budget. Support creators, big and small

Thats not a cool opinion. There are student discount versions and more cost effective versions such as GIMP for photos of Krita for digital painting. Both are free. Imagine saying to a builder "until you can make it, steal a drill and a van" ?
-
It's not the same, builder analogy is a stretch. Not every software has a cheaper version (Max for instance) and even the cheap versions can be an impossible cost for a student with no income. Don't shame people for doing what literally most of us did to break through the barrier

When i was a teenager pirating it was indeed essential but only due to extortionate pricing and no entry point. Theres very little excuse for it now that subscriptions are so cheap and accessible though
-
Creative Cloud is 45 GBP a month. Maya LT priced similarly. Max has no cheap version. Even though they're cheaper, still impossibly expensive for a high school student with no money

You're suggestion that it's hypocritical for a freelance artist to be mad when a large corporation steals their work, but not mad when a 14 year old bootlegs Photoshop to learn how to use it, is dumb. Both are technically illegal, but they are totally different dynamics of power

Exactly i agree; as long as when / if you can you pay for what you use and dont use torrenting to avoid it :) hopefully we’ll see more do what nuke / houdini do and offer free versions you can learn on - as well as more well priced indie versions of software
-
Totally agree, I think we're on the same page. The price reduction + student options these days are amazing and surely make the paid versions way more accessible to the young, students, and the unemployed / low-income learners

I agree! And once you have paper Creative Cloud is such a good deal.

I bet some kids could even pay for CC with their allowance these days. But when I started using Adobe and Autodesk (well actually 3DS was called Discreet back then) back in 2003 it was next to impossible for me to pay for them and I learnt skills that made my career.
