A town I visited yesterday used to have 150 houses and 14 churches. Town ended up totally destroyed. Its almost like devoting such huge resources to religious worship was not foolproof insurance policy after all.
I listened to an interesting podcast ep about how lots of churches are being shut down because they have no congregation + aren't historically important enough to be genuine tourist destinations, + the buildings are listed and can't be converted to other uses
