To take some responsibility for this: "unable" means "I can't afford (as in dollars) to be transparent in this climate especially when I know my arguments won't get a proper hearing"

When you fully expected to spend these years bringing the world closer to your own vision of a transhuman future but instead find yourself nearly paralyzed from panic over your nation fumbling its way toward an abyss, and unable to talk sense into anyone who can help.

Sounds a bit like whining. Smart thing to do is close your ears and get established financially while crossing fingers the world doesn't end, or make common cause with pugnacious (and probably unsubtle and non-nuanced) like-minded others to buy from / support each other. Ugh.
