It took me six minutes to write this tweet (or I would have seen yours and rewritten mine)https://twitter.com/systemergent/status/1050756186516025346?s=19 …

I also think that I take so long with the first draft because I'm no good at editing after the fact though. once I've written something I kind of internalise it so that it feels very difficult to change even if I want to. so pre-editing feels like a way to dodge that problem

or maybe I'm just bad at editing my own words precisely because I don't do it enough

yeah me too, I do editing as a job but when it comes to my own words I just feel too close to them to objectively assess what needs to go

If you can treat your writing as "from you" and your editing (of your own words) as "for an audience" maybe?

ah I never have any idea what "the audience" wants in any circumstances

Well...you can look at it more exploitatively as "what do I want from the audience"

I want them to read my words and enjoy them I suppose, but I'm not sure how that helps

The same way I am bad at developing business ideas because all the filters intervene: "yes, but this factor" or "it would cost too much to explain it to them". Instead of letting it germinate. Also, I think you should try writing on some kind of drugs. Or even good old alcohol.
