I'm curious how the "special snowflake" meme relates to NPC. I was never quite sure whether the former was meant to be an oxymoron ("special" snowflake, i.e. all snowflakes are the same) and as such synonymous to NPC, or rather a genuine attack on uniqueness.

I think the 'snowflake' meme originated with conservatives mocking lefty campus histrionics. I never viewed it as having anything to do with uniqueness or conformity but instead it is about (real or perceived) emotional fragility

There's been a conflation (and really, what else do we ever do with language these days) of "special/precious snowflake" -- a Millennial child praised and rewarded to excess by helicopter parents -- with "delicate snowflake" i.e. a neurotic, thin-skinned clutcher of the pearls
