Don't really buy the "school is a scam/prison/evil" thing, like there's tons of bad school systems, the textbook industry is insanely evil, those things don't reflect on the concept of public education per se, it's possible to do this stuff right

Almost nobody's family or community is equipped to give them a well rounded education in just the stuff we actually do understand really well as a society

I think it's because we imagine societies that are structured totally different from ours, not everyone can be, like, a gentleman farmer with the leisure time to teach themselves calculus or something

True. Otoh, almost anyone can learn to read, write, do arithmetic and geometry, grasp basic concepts of civics, get a broad outline of history, econ, maybe basic argumentation -- these aren't as hard to teach. Kids who could learn O-chem, calculus, etc are a small fraction.
