Hipsterism was basically a way to signal that your parents are urban and well-educated. I haven't done polls, but I wouldn't be surprised if >30% of Brooklynites have lawyer parents, for example.
This is true of scare-quotes "hipsters" (the most common kind) but I must say I knew several in the mid-2000s of humble origins who authentically loved Modest Mouse and woodworking and making postcards for their friends, etc, with no pretensions of social advancement. Nice kids.
