Thank you for bringing a voice to those who can’t speak – the sharks, the sea turtles and the groupers. I’m sure if they could speak they would be thanking you.

I applaud the Aeolian Islands Preservation Foundation and their partners for doing what they’re doing to protect the Aeolian Islands and build community support for coexisting peacefully with nature. The time to act is now.

Only 5 percent of the ocean has been seen, let alone mapped or explored. We know how to exploit the sea. Should we not first go see what is there?

The ocean matters. If the sea is sick, we'll feel it. If it dies, we die. Our future and the state of the ocean are one.

I think all kids start out as explorers. I think even all of you, whoever you are or wherever you are, you don't lose that part of being a kid, asking questions: who, what, why, where, when, how? That's what explorers do. That's what scientists do.

When rain comes from the sky, it’s the ocean touching you. When you breathe air, it’s the ocean touching you. Our living ocean generates the oxygen, driving the great systems that keep us alive.

We need to give back to nature, which has given us everything. It’s working here in the Galápagos and it can work on a much grander scale. It’s the best possible recipe for a long and enduring future for humankind.

We’re seeing now an awareness that if you don’t take care of the ocean, the land is in trouble. This is true not only in the Galápagos Islands but globally. The ocean is the cornerstone of our life support system.

It’s an encouraging message I have to give about what has happened here because it’s evidence that people care and have taken action to protect 97% of the land. This is a work in progress.

I first came to the Galápagos as a scientist in 1966. It seems like a different world. It is in fact, a different world. Here in the Galápagos Islands, it’s a miracle that so much is still the way it likely was a thousand years ago.

Whether you're a little anemone living in the sand under the sea, a pine tree on top of a mountain or a human being living in a city, we all share the same basic DNA, with infinite complexity and infinite variation that sets us all apart not just as species but as individuals.
