Like a windows on the past, Pascal Dagnan-Bouveret (1852 –1929) was one of the first to use the then new medium of photography to bring greater realism to his paintings :pic.twitter.com/Wmmr7VeQk9

Was this a similar technique as proposed in the documentary 'Tim's Veneer' about Johannes Vermeer's technique? Fascinating collision of fine art and technology.

Thomas Eakins, one of America's greatest academic painters, used photography extensively, but didn't talk about it much. It was controversial. Critics could tell that he was painting things like moving carriages and running horses that must be based on photographs.

But despite controversy, a galaxy of artists used photography as a kind of modern sketchbook. Most likely these paintings aren't done from single photos, but different heads, body positions, etc. were photographed separately & the painter drew upon them as stand-ins for models.

A great book, "Beyond Impressionism: the Naturalist Impulse" covers these artists, most of whom used photography to push the boundaries of academic technique.
