#onthisday, 45 years ago in 1976, #NASA successfully landed 'Viking 2' on Mars, following 'Viking 1' the year prior. The orbiting counterparts of these landers captured the first close images of the Martian polar ice caps.

Taken by HC Russell for his book Photographs of The Milky-Way, these were shot at the Sydney Observatory in the 1890s.

'The simplest useful criterion is the lagtime, or difference between sunset and moonset. If it's greater than 47 mins (at the latitude of Sydney) the #CrescentMoon should be visible to the unaided eye after sunset and before the setting of the Moon.'
