right after college, almost 20 yrs ago, I spent 2 years volunteering weekly at a domestic violence shelter in Boston. It cemented my understanding of how structural and systemic gendered violence is. and asking "why don't they leave/why do they go back" wildly misses the mark.

women who experience sexual violence are damned if they do report, damned if they don't report, and damned if they try to defend themselves. this New Yorker article is devastating:

PhD student, c.2020: Here’s a limited argument I made based on years of specialized research. Hope it’s OK 😕 Philosopher dude, c.1770: Here are some Thoughts I had in the Bath. They constitute Universal & Self-Evident Laws of Nature. FIGHT ME.

ACs and reviewers: If you have any questions, please email us. We may not be able to do a lot to streamline things at this point for this cycle, but we welcome feedback and some feedback could be actionable for next round in April. Thanks!

I have a paper under review now that engages with race in some parts. Among other things, we have a collaborator with expertise on race and I’m also appreciative of the many race+tech scholars who tweet about the topic that others can listen and try to learn from. /end (!)

Also, her paper rightly critiques a paper I wrote almost a decade ago about families, tech, and race as a grad student. I wish I had done that paper differently, and I would do it differently now.

If I recall correctly, only two other students were present (the awesome from CSE and Carl Haynes from UMSI) plus about 15 faculty. Finda did a fantastic job leading the discussion and everyone should read the paper.

yesterday we had our 2nd meeting of our race+tech reading group at . The reading group is long overdue, but we’re doing it now. The smart and brave Finda () led a discussion on her forthcoming paper on critical race theory in HCI.

This is the 1st semester in my 8 years of being a professor that I’ve overcommitted myself and haven’t been able to keep a ~40 hour work week. I have a reputation as someone with good work-life balance so just thought I’d disclose that I don’t always get it right either!

Second time in two weeks I’ve talked to a dad whose teenage son is being radicalized by content recommended to him by YouTube. Regular folks have no idea this stuff is out there, being force fed to kids, and no tools to help reduce or prevent the harm.

periodic reminder that this is one of the most clear and succinct explanations of intersectionality out there, including how it is so often misused in academia

Imagine if large-scale analysis papers also started to include positionality statements! That would be completely fun and interesting to read.

I would love to see a large study where multiple research teams are given a big new dataset and they independently analyze the data and write a paper, then conduct post-hoc analyses of how researcher scholarly lenses can shape the stories that data tell
