Even tho it’s still brown, I might’ve cracked on this 🙄 Anyone fancy a trip to Orkney? Possibly leaving Sunday.

4 Scaup still at Combe Valley this afternoon, on the furthest (western-most) flood visible from the gate (at blue dot). Great site with Water Rail, 7-8 Pintail, Bullfinch also present. Access via footpath just west of Haven Road (caravan park) off Bexhill Road (A259).

Dash to Pulborough for the last 30 mins of daylight failed to produce the Smew but enough light to see a Barn Owl on N Brooks and the 2 Whitefronts from Winpenny. Car park vigil til 6pm hoping for Woodcock but no luck (but 2 vocal Tawny Owls instead).

As pressure mounts to ban moorland burning, expect to hear desperate industry voices invoking ‘wild fire risk’ to justify business as usual scenarios. This is a misleading and nonsensical argument, which seeks to lock us in to a biologically impoverished future. Thread. 1/14

Also a single London tick, a very belated Whooper Swan a Amwell on Christmas day. Slightly different outside the UK with over 90 new birds from ‘non-birding’ trips to Corsica and Thailand. Slow year on patch with only a few new birds (incl Firecrest, Barwit and Ring Ouzel)

Better for county ticks with 13 in Sussex: Ring necked Duck, Fudge Duck, Quail, Squacco Heron, Glossy Ibis, Kentish Plover, 2 Red necked Phalaropes, Grey Phalarope, Wryneck, Hume’s Warbler, Tree Sparrow, Serin, Twite (benefit of only having lived here for 2 years).

Happy New Year! Slightly slow year in 2019 for British ticks with only two definites (Tengmalm’s and Booby) but another two possibles - Eastern Black eared Wheatear (as a split) and Paddyfield Pipit (not too hopeful!) - would make it an average year.
