I'm seeing a lot of ppl on my feed decrying the decriminalization and legalization of pot as something that rots the brain. Your periodic reminder that sugar and sleep deprivation are worse for your brain than pot. I can get into details if you'd like.

Sleep deprivation really fucks up the brain. Most humans (excluding ~1/200 ppl who have a genetic adaptation) need ~4-5 REM cycles/24 hrs. Each REM cycle (on average) corresponds to ~90-120 min of sleep. For most ppl, ~7 hrs is enough. If you're training hard, you need more.

Sleep deprivation leads to higher cortisol, which's a stress hormone. It makes you hungrier by screwing up leptin signaling. In sleep, your brain basically cleans up the garbage it develops during the day. You don't learn properly if you're sleep deprived.
