Want to reduce the carbon footprint of your food? Focus on what you eat, not whether your food is local Eating local is one of the most misguided pieces of environmental advice. Transport typically accounts for less than 1% of beef’s GHG emissions.

My new post: in US cities, historic preservation councils are blocking solar panel installations that might be visible from the street. It might seem silly, but it just illustrates how change-averse people are at the local level and what a grind reform is.

Don't blame people for wanting to drive. People do what is easy, affordable and convenient. Instead, let's continue to push for a better system. Pressure decision makers to make transit, cycling, walking and rolling more accessible. Only then will we see real behaviour change.

Betting against further battery cost declines is betting against human ingenuity. So far, that's been a really bad bet.

Smart piece by : Addressing climate change is going to require the building and rebuilding of a staggering amount of infrastructure. America has become really inept at doing that, for a whole bunch of reasons, and that'll need to change, fast.

My new post: “mass timber” involves large pieces of engineered wood strong enough to substitute for concrete and steel in tall buildings. Among architects & designers, it’s the hottest thing going. Climate hawks are on board too...with some reservations.

Whether you're a Republican or Democrat, whether you think humans are causing climate change or not, spending billions of tax $$s on new highways, railways or airports w/o taking into account likely flood & ocean levels should infuriate you.

Every few years CBC recycles an article about how electric cars may not be as green as we think. They get it wrong every time. Here’s the latest example. This argument has been debunked repeatedly. For example, in The Guardian here:

This proposed plan in Calgary would create one of Canada's largest solar farms — and generate enough electricity to power 14,000 homes. It's investments like this that are good for the environment, good for the economy, and good for our future. 🇨🇦🇮🇪

I have a question: do we have the technology to decarbonize our economies already or not? Do we have enough to get almost all the way there? What parts, if any, still need more innovation/development before deployment? (I am Twitter-testing my assumptions.) TIA!

Question for Twitter: What is the argument for caring about climate change that *you personally* find most compelling? (This could be different from the argument you think is most likely to persuade others. For many people, these might not be the same!)

I'm not a politician, so I can say what they can't; we're wildly off track holding +1.5-2C over preindustrial temperatures. does a good job reviewing why 👇. But we must make every effort; every +0.1C will matter. And a pathway exists, when we choose to walk it
