The way that there's a changing, morphing set of audience expectations, beliefs, predictions, etc about the work which are being actively manipulated to create a hermeneutic experience—that the act of interpretation itself replaces traditional plot as a kind of narrative.

I also think a lotta online folks unhappy with contemporary art have argued it should be involved in a very different project (e.g. emphasizing beauty) than it is. That's a legit argument, but usually skips trying to understand the avant project in its strongest incarnation.

One benefit of the "gaming audience's predictive structures" frame is it draws a through-line from the likes of, on one hand, Cubist painting/Dada/modernism's "make it new" (which opened 20th C) through the happenings, psychedelia, & conceptual work of the midcentury...

...& finally to the social justice-oriented/activist art which defines contemporary production. All these movements are preoccupied with perception, disruption, and disrupting perception: in other words, manipulating our predictive schemas.

I often trip out thinking about how engagement with static art—e.g., a painting—is itself dynamic. Why do my eyes take their particular path across the surface of a painting? Why does my attention shift from one sound to another? Predictive/free energy accounts fit nicely here.

Thanks! Yup, & I feel like what most of my friends think is "cool" about a contemp visual artwork is the (temporal) thought process they get interacting with it, the tempo of it surprising and revealing itself to them. Bosch is v v temporal too but in a super different way.
