So my colleagues went to another source: The SFPD. Of course, SFPD is far from an unbiased data source. But unless they were actively fudging numbers, their incident reports would show if there was a major spike in reported shoplifting at stores set to close. & there wasn't. 3/
One of the stores only had 7 reports this year! Of course, most shoplifting incidents aren't reported. But even if only 1/10 incidents is reported to police, that's 70 incidents so far this year...not an insurmountable number for a big chain like Walgreens, I should think 4/
The story also looked into other possible reasons for the Walgreens closures. For 1, they have quite a lot of stores in the city (maybe too many to be profitable?). 2, they have to compete w/ online shoppers. And 3, fewer people are walking around b/c of the pandemic. 5/pic.twitter.com/vVj4S06A4w
Deciding to close a store that provides meds and other essentials is not popular. In this case, it was definitely worth investigating WG's stated reasoning.
But if anyone @Walgreens has data showing shoplifting at these stores has actually soared, we'd love to see it.
Great thread. I wonder if 1 in 100 shoplift incidents are reported. My Walgreens is on Market and I’ve more than once watched staff shout at shoplifters as they ran out the door but be powerless to do anything. Everyone shudders and goes back to work.

Why report if nothing is to be done about it? A waste of employee time calling and dealing with police reports. I don’t blame Walgreens, I blame people like you who tolerate and encourage it.
