  1. Etymology of the day: ‘rostrum’, a speaker’s platform, is a use of a Latin word for ‘beak’, which came from ‘rodere’, to gnaw (hence ‘rodent’). The speakers’ rostra in the Roman Forum were decorated with the ‘beaks’ or pointed prows of captured warships.

English can be grisly. 'Remorse' is from the Latin for 'biting hard', referring to the bite of regret that eats away at you. And 'sarcasm' comes from the Greek for 'tearing flesh': a remark so biting it cuts the skin.

wotcha: from the medieval greeting 'what cheer?', 'how are you?' goodbye: from the farewell 'God be with ye'. howdy: a shortening of the 16th-century 'how do ye do?'. This week's SRWP has us talking about greetings, affection, and Cupid's warehouse..

The word ‘history’ comes from the Greek ‘historia’, ‘a finding out’, and ‘histor’, a ‘wise man’. But its beginnings are even more ancient: from a root that also gave us the Latin ‘videre’, to see’. Because once we see history, we should never forget.

So chuffed that won Best Educational App at the Bett Awards last night. It’s a magical thing for kids and adults who struggle with spelling, and I’m very happy to be part of it. Here’s a glimpse or two:

English spelling is one of the hardest things we ever have to learn. I'm excited and betwittered to be working on the Sir Linkalot app, using links, animations and etymologies to achieve wonderful results, particularly amongst those with dyslexia. .

Gigglemug (1800s): someone who is constantly and irritatingly cheery, as opposed to the morning humgruffin who refuses to speak. This week’s podcast might give you a private smile or two. It’s our first live episode, and we loved it.

For any students and teachers who feel like the curriculum is a mad dash to the finish, for the Romans the word meant a fast and furious chariot race, as well as the course along which it ran. It moved into English to mean a different kind of course, of studies and education.

An 'ultracrepidarian' is a presumptuous critic who offers an opinion on matters far outside their sphere of knowledge. (From the Latin for 'beyond the sole', and a story of a cobbler who criticised not just a shoe in a famous painting, but the legs too).
