If he meant sum total, he would've just said "total audience" which is pithier than "both in person and around the globe"

Right. It wasn't the clearest choice of words. But I still got what he meant and saw immediately that press did NOT get it.

Yes, I agree it was silly to call a press conference about this, take no questions, and then clarify 2 days later.
