  2. It is a quiet joy to engage in work that aligns with my interests and values. Sometimes this feeling, which I’ve been experiencing for some time now, leaves me wanting to hold my breath.

In Jan 2018, I set goal to email someone 1x a week to tell them how I liked a book or article. I sent my 100th note today. It is one of my favorite things. Next time you read something interesting, useful, or thought-provoking, why not tell the author?

What interesting, thought-provoking, or just plain fun math book have you read recently that others may not have heard of? I highly recommend _Is That a Big Number_ by Andrew Elliott. It entertains as it helps make sense of numbers (some mind-boggling) that surround us.

Someone at is having fun with the duck I drew in one of my book’s chapters. They’ve not only put him on my book’s cover but he’s now on the spine, walking on top of the serious Oxford logo.

Yes! I often tell this to writers: Give the reader something to picture in her head, and only then move to the general principle at work.

Funny story re that duck: of the 300+ sketches in my book, my editor selected that 1 for the cover. I drew this duck as a kid to make my brother smile. In my book, the duck makes sense of the Jordan Curve Thm. When my brother recently saw the cover, he said, “hey, it’s The Duck!”
