This is a helpful follow up for folks who were paying attention to the Meta/Wire scandal. Also a good reminder for all of us that tech investigations should be held to the same high standard of fact checking you would expect from investigative journalism

New work w/ @Mahaprajna_N & @ArchitMeta
We looked into Devesh Kumar's past and honestly, we were not surprised that he pulled a fast one in The Wire's newsroom.
A lot of this investigation is also based on my SOCMINT skills and I am really proud of it. twitter.com/AltNews/status…

Journalists “have to find ways to tell data stories that give readers a sense of agency, not apathy, around the role technology play in their life,” told #NPFfellows.

Corruption is flourishing, inequality is growing - and disinformation is rampant. But we are not powerless, we can do something about it - for example with a small donation to organisations that stand for change. If you can afford, please consider a donation. 🧵

The Pixel Hunt continues to be the gift that keeps on giving. Another example of why the context in which data is collected matters. It's hard to find these examples through fully automated programmatic collection. twitter.com/angiewaller/st 1/2

Researchers at the Opiod Policy Institute used @suryamattu's Blacklight tool to show how substance-abuse health sites are sharing data about users with third parties.
I love it when people use our persistent monitoring tools for accountability!

Scoop: Meta promised "immigration support" for laid-off workers on visas. But former employees told me that they're getting "radio silence" from a dedicated Meta hotline despite multiple emails. In desperation, some people have hired their own lawyers.

I saw this play out in a slightly different way when I first started working as a data journalist. There were many incentives to _visualize_ the data but not as many to collect it.
Quote Tweet
Most of our time should be spent collecting & interrogating datasets, and simply describing those datasets, rather than building fancy models. But first we must deal with the incentive problem—the former type of work isn’t considered sophisticated enough to be publication worthy.
