Nevaeh reached out to S&P members because she's been waiting for 9 years for her mother to come back to her and doesn't understand what taking clemency so long. She was 4 when Tomiekia was incarcerated. Now she's 13. She asked, how long do I have to wait to have my mother back?
Nevaeh's letter is heartbreaking & crystal clear. Describing the complex impact Tomiekia's incarceration has had on her life, she writes, "My life is like a trauma." She echoes millions of children of incarcerated parents, children of incarcerated survivors of domestic violence.
The state-enforced separation of parents from their children through incarceration is yet another dimension of violence against criminalized survivors. It's unconscionable. Commutations is a critical tool that governors can use to begin a process of repair. #FreeTomiekia
