the purpose of doing this is not to convince a white supremacist to hug a black person. if the dominant narrative is "US democracy has always eventually done right by the majority" then it is impossible to imagine, and plan, for otherwise. which we need to do rn.

Reconstruction has to be one of the most overlooked periods in US history as far as k-12 education goes. That and everything since like 1970.

All I remembered about Reconstruction from school was that it happened after the Civil War in the South, along with a general sense that it was bad. It wasn't until much later that I learned what was actually going down. I went to school in the Upper Midwest.

I went to school in *Connecticut* and didn’t learn any of this shit until I was well into adulthood.

This is one of the biggest problems in the US, unlike say Germany or South Africa where they confronted their nation’s atrocities. We hide our history only to be shocked and appalled ever 20 years when the same things keep happening again and again
