  3. That is unacceptable and disrespectful but given that this is aimed at the only woman of colour on the degree who is permanent staff, yes it is flexing white male privilege and entitlement. And yes that is racist and sexist.

  4. And at the core of it, you are really saying: I don’t trust or respect your ability to decide what is on the reading list; I don’t respect your expertise or knowledge; I don’t think you can teach me anything.

  5. I spend weeks if not months devising the syllabus. I spend hours, days preparing ach session. So if you can be bothered to read what I am teaching, consider it boring, self-indulgent, uninteresting, and can find ‘better’ books on your own, why are you in my class?

  6. Same student thought The Bastard of Istanbul was ‘boring’ and that The Reluctant Fundamentalist ‘didn’t work,’ Haroun and the Sea of Stories ‘could be more straightforward.’ It’s not a once off. And why no, my white, male colleagues don’t get this performativity

And then the “I am not really racist” tactic: “I read The Nickel Boys. It’s by a Black writer and talks about serious issues like racism.” Yeah so here, have a goddamm cookie

Follow up to he wasn’t ‘feeling it’: “I get the point - a 100 years of the story of a small town, this family with rape, incest, blah blah blah. It’s too self- indulgent.” As a teacher, I can work with ignorance but how do I work with that kind of arrogance?

What racism+sexism looks like in the classroom: English male student with a smug grin telling me he hadn’t read the prescribed book because “he gave it 60%, wasn’t feeling it, and read the ‘better’ book.” The book in question? A Hundred Years of Solitude by Garcia Marquez!

Lola Felicidad delos Reyes one of the few remaining Filipino comfort women passed away Saturday February 1. Kindly remember her fight for justice and support the other Lolas and their families in seeking justice for sexual violence and war crimes that Japan refuses to address.

I am reading 's speech aghast. What the absolute chuff is this? Why is he talking about Superman? And he thinks the Glorious Revolution ended the questions of Union?? Has he ever been to the Republic of Ireland???

The Original PROJECT FEAR Two different takes on same story. reports the emergency legislation to prevent offender releases. But the even passes up the chance to headline the work of the government it loves and instead frames it in terms that stoke fear.

This is nonsense. The Ghosts team left HH in 2013, they’ve done plenty since. Secondly, it’s called Horrible Histories, not Horrible History. I’ve always loved that, because it reflects the fact that there is no singular version of the past, but rather many interpretations

Much of the discussion about Empire over the past few days is a reminder that the UK's colonial history (and not a sanitised version that treats it as both 'good' and 'bad') should be a key part of the national curriculum

Just realised that WLM covers this month. We hadn’t realised that it would co-incide when we at planned our sessions. We will still be discussing the novel’s themes of sexuality, gender, race, non-state violence and more.
