        - MP ethnicity has weak effect on nominations for leader. Ideology/faction & candidate matter more. - Symbolic representation matters more in deputy race - non-white MPs cluster around one left group (1/4) & various soft left/centre-left groups; seldom towards the 'right' of PLP

I think this gives too much weight to Starmer as indicator of political faction; Mark Hendrick, Shabana Mahmood, Flo Eshalomi, arguably Khalid Mahmood all on the right of the party. Three of those to JP’s right, I’d argue.

There are now 41 bme Labour MPs out of 202 (20%) out of 65 (10%) across the Commons. There were just 13 out of 355 Labour MPs (4%) and 15 across parties (2.5%) when Gordon Brown took over from Blair in 2007. There has been a rapid acceleration since 2010.pic.twitter.com/f3ghWQQQA2

Approx a fifth of Labour voters are not white - around two million out of ten million voters. Party membership is much less diverse than either PLP or Labour vote (though Labour does not collect or publish any data on this). @ESRCPtyMembers estimate Labour party is just 4% bme!pic.twitter.com/reTWC52cVx

Could next deputy leader/leader at least collect some data & publish an estimate? Keir Starmer was speaking to the Labour Party in Tottenham tonight. Tottenham 22% white British, 27% white other, 50% non-white (27% black, 11% Asian, 12% mixed) in 2011 census a decade ago.pic.twitter.com/C2TkOlHyku

If @ESRCPtyMembers estimate of 4% was about right, Labour could have just 20,000 non-white members out of about 520,000 That would translate to 1/100 non-white Lab voters as party members (20k of 2 million) & about 1 out of 16 white British Labour voters (up to 500k of 8m, 5-6%)

(Not sure how robust 4% is as an estimate, or if may be a little low). But if Labour got as good at getting its black & Asian voters to join the party as its white voters, could expect to recruit maybe 100,000 - 120,000+ "missing" ethnic minority members. A good Q for hustings?

        3. The lack of diversity in the picture is not reflective of Tottenham but the Tottenham Labour party is not as diverse as the community. It’s a long standing problem and not really @Keir_Starmer fault. The question is why some CLPs dont reflect their communities.

Ethnic minority candidates received 1/6 of all MP/MEP final nominations (199) for leader (Lisa Nandy, 31); just over 1/4 of all MP/MEP nominations (196) for deputy (Butler 29, Allin-Khan 23). Among non-white MPs, it was 1/5 leader noms; just under half (17/38) for deputy
