I did an author visit at an elementary school in Chicago a couple of weeks ago to discuss my new book. 100 4th graders listened eagerly as I mentioned that I grew up speaking a different language at home than I did at school. I asked, "How many of you live in a home like that?"

In my guest lecture for ’s class today, I discussed memes & trust in the news, & used ’s tweet as a final discussion prompt. The students sided w/ Areej saying that memes do not always compromise the news, and may in fact deepen our engagement with them.

Do we laugh or cringe at the Dexter meme? I wrote this piece on memes, language, and politics for exploring the tensions between celebrating and objectifying our accents. Read it here:

Prepping the syllabus for my Public Speaking class next semester. What are some (academic or pop press) readings you like that discuss public speaking and the body, being a person of color, having an accent, or speaking in a non-native language?

At my guest lecture about meme culture yesterday, I was asked what my favorite meme is. It's difficult for me to choose just one, but this one is definitely in the top 3 list!

Let me remind you that diversity does NOT mean inclusion. If you are simply bringing in black students for numbers yet not providing them with a intentionally anti racist environment and the tools they need to succeed you are simply putting black students in dangerous spaces.
