And, you know, rage at and antipathy toward women. I read Elliot Rodger's manifesto. He describes physically assaulting women on the street because he took their failure to smile at him as unforgivable mistreatment.https://twitter.com/alexandraerin/status/989965784129695744 …

Especially when we consider that, anecdotally, the "incel" communities seem to be rife with people who don't lack access so much as they have unrealistic expectations and narrow ideas about what sort of sexual attention is worth having.

If you think that the "incel" movement is about wanting to find someone nice to have sex with and not being able to, read Elliot Rodger's manifesto. It's not about that at all. It's not even vaguely, tangentially about that.

Okay, but by using the term "people who identify as incels" it seems to me that you're describing it as a self-identified group of people with shared values and a sense of shared community.

It's really not. Plenty of people of all genders live with mental illness, and don't kill people. Plenty of people of all genders are lonely and want sex, and don't kill people. The ones killing people are clear that they hate women.

At the core of it, they hate themselves because they feel inadequate. They would rather be victims than do anything to actually be someone who deserves self-respect.

TW: inc3l (sorry to repeat myself) What they want from sex isn't pleasure, it's validation. The want to be with a woman that will cause other men to think highly of them and therefore allow them to think highly of themselves.

TW: inc3l there is, for them, an agreed on ranking of women, and the measure of a man's worth is how elite a woman they can get. Obviously, this view is utterly dehumanizing. You can't think that way if you regard women as individuals with whom your interaction would be unique.

TW: inc3l So, they set up women as the determinants of their self-worth and are shown to be losers. The women who would make them winners don't want them, and the women who might want them would, in their eyes, mark them as losers.

TW: inc3l they COULD question their measure of their merit. They could try to see women is individuals and not care how other people rated them. They won't, but they could. They could accept their own toxicity and work on being better.

TW: inc3l but the whole thought process and community is built to make sure that they NEVER actually take an honest look at themselves. Privilege is, as the kids say, a shield against self-awareness.

TW: inc3l So what they do is they get angry that women have the right to determine men's self-worth (that women do not actually have that ability will not occur to them). They create elaborate power fantasies for a world where women cannot see them as the losers that they are.

TW: inc3l final thought: the power fantasies wouldn't actually work. Abusers only get more dangerous when they get what they want. What they need is to unlearn toxic thinking & develop self-awareness, but they have built & society has built for them many defenses against that.
