Did Matt Yglesias always have such an obvious public humiliation fetish and I just didn't notice? It feels like something's shifted since the lockdown.

I mean, yeah, he's always been a contrarian, and often in a not particularly thought-through way. But it feels like now he's regularly putting up tweets that serve no other purpose than to allow people to dunk on him.

It's a pattern I've noticed a lot, and it feels like it's mostly specific to white guys: You get dunked on enough, and at a certain point that becomes your brand, so you start saying stuff just to piss people off—not to argue your position, just to piss them off.

It's distinct from the "you can't drive me away" thing, where people will just dig in an carry on sincere arguments in the middle of a dogpile, and it's not quite the same as shitposting, because there does seem to be a degree of earnestness there.

It's like, "You think my opinions suck, do you? Well, here's another one you'll hate."

Like, a few days ago, Yglesias tweeted "I am still mad about what a dumb campaign Julian Castro ran." He didn't follow up, and when I went and looked, I couldn't find much of anything he'd said on the subject in the past that would illuminate it. It was just … there. Glistening.

I can think of three or four other people who wandered into a similar schtick over the last few years, just off the top of my head. (All white guys of a certain type.) It's A Thing, and I find it insidiously icky in a way that's hard to articulate.

I remember that one, but this does feel different. Writing contrarian thinkpieces is one thing—spewing out gnomic tweets that are specifically crafted to inspire waves of dunks is another.
