Kashuv said in his apology letter that he only used slurs "for their shock value" in an effort to one-up his peers in saying the most over-the-top stuff possible. But this text isn't that.

This text isn't one-upmanship, or herd behavior. It's Kashuv casually using a racial slur in a private conversation to express disgust with a fellow student for dating black men.

As always, when your public apology misrepresents the accusations against you, people are likely to discount its sincerity and seriousness.

I'm not entirely comfortable with making a 16-year-old's private utterances a topic of national debate, but Kashuv chose to make his apology public and to criticize Harvard for not accepting it, and his media supporters are making it the centerpiece of their defense of him.

Given that, I think it's worth pointing out that Kashuv's statements to Harvard misrepresented the comments at issue—both as to the content of his speech and as to the context in which the slurs were uttered.

And of course Harvard has particular reason to be concerned about admitting a student with a history of engaging in racist attacks on his fellow students' sex lives, then lying about it when caught.

(And yes, as someone just noted, those texts have more than a whiff of MRA/incel misogyny to them, along with the racism.)

Genuine question: How does Harvard have his text messages? Did someone tell or do students now hand over phones as part of admissions?
-
Multiple people who went to school with him have made screenshots public. I've seen it claimed that he had a reputation as a racist at school, and people were frustrated by his move into high-profile conservative activism. But I can't confirm that independently.

That screenshot hit me the most and is why I’m convinced Harvard made the right decision. There is this mentality that when white women get with black men, they are “tainted,” and it is one of the most aggressively racist mentalities that exists. And it’s not uncommon
-
Exactly. That wasn't a momentary impulse to shock. It was a statement of his beliefs, and it was both racist and misogynist.

I don't know why he's so upset about this. He's still got a bright future either in law enforcement or as a Supreme Court Justice.

Yeah, that's how I felt too...

So maybe less of what he said a couple of years ago and more of what he said a couple of months ago.
-
What year is that text message from?
-
I don't know that the date has been made public. The other stuff, from the group doc, is from about 18 months ago.
-
He was just an infant way back then.
-
If he was black, you’d be saying he was an adult and should’ve known what he was saying was wrong....
