Trump admin is trying to deport a toddler from Peru who was adopted by Americans as an infant. Yes, you read that correctly.https://kdvr.com/2018/08/09/colorado-parents-fighting-to-stop-legally-adopted-four-year-old-daughter-from-being-deported/ …

(While I have questions about some aspects of this story, those questions aren't the reason behind the deportation effort, and deporting this kid isn't intended to help her in any way.)

And no, this absolutely wouldn’t be happening if the kid was the Canadian child of the mom’s best friend from college.

There’s no policy argument for snatching this child from her parents. No moral argument. No economic argument. No principle.

Some folks in my mentions the last 24 hours have suggested that this couple likely made some mistakes in the adoption process, and I have no reason to doubt that. Couple thoughts on that subject, though.

First, the Trump admin's ramping up of capricious, opaque deportation policies, and its practice of engaging in sadistic cruelty toward children of color, renders this a more terrifying crisis for the family than it would have been under previous administrations.

Second, we've seen over and over again that this administration's immigration machinery is willing to brazenly flout the law in the interests of ethnic cleansing.

And finally, if the horrific practices of the Trump admin shine a harsh light on the bad acts of previous administrations, that's a good thing—and can serve as a spur to a wholesale reexamination of immigration policy.

Proceed as if the Trump administration is worse and more vicious than what came before and you'll usually be right—and when you're wrong, you'll have brought attention to something that's needed fixing since before they came to power.

Okay. Yes, this story is of obvious interest to me, and yes, adoptive parents have to be very proactive with their kids’ citizenship. BUT. Not every immigration story is a “OMG RACIST TRUMP” story. /1 https://kdvr.com/2018/08/09/colorado-parents-fighting-to-stop-legally-adopted-four-year-old-daughter-from-being-deported/ …

Even if the roots of this family's crisis are mostly in structural bureaucratic deficiencies, we should still treat it as likely that those deficiencies are being weaponized by Trump apparatchiks.
