Rafael Nadal confirms that he is also out of Rome despite "an improvement" in recent days. Unless he plays one of the ATP 250 events in Geneva or Lyon starting May 21, he will go into the French Open without playing a match on clay this year.

Should be time for the others to shine in the absence of Emma Raducanu. Instead, no Brits in the WTA top 100 for the first time since 2008. And if none come through French Open qualifying, it’s the first slam since the 2009 US Open without a British woman.

Something about Madrid scheduling is off. It feels like there's more time off than actual tennis being played, which is not common for tennis tournaments to say the least... IW and Miami don't feel like this at all but I don't know what it is they do. It's so dragged out.

Further details on Raducanu's three operations here. One on her right hand today, the other to come on her left hand in a couple of weeks and another in between on her left ankle. All said to be straightforward procedures. But the US Open is unlikely.

Emma Raducanu is having a "minor procedure done on both hands" to resolve a recurring injury. Sidelined for "the next few months", meaning that she is out of Wimbledon and the French Open. She is also using the time to have another "minor procedure" on her ankle.

Not sure the expansion of Masters events beyond a week is a good thing. Used to enjoy the short and sharp Madrid-Rome clay court double over a fortnight (big names in action just about every day). Now it drags on. A four-week advance commitment for the players.

With hindsight, the 2021 Indian Wells Open was an ominous sign of what was to come for Emma Raducanu on tour. Injuries and missteps have contributed to her fall out of the world's top-100, but few believe she won't climb back up the rankings at some point.

Down to world No 85 today, Emma Raducanu likely needs two wins in Madrid this week to remain inside the world's top-100. Not ideal then that her second-round opponent is the world No 1 (if she comes through the first round vs a qualifier).

Very diplomatic of the ITF to “welcome” a WTA announcement that overshadowed yesterday’s media promotional activities for the Billie Jean King Cup. A shame that the WTA couldn’t have chosen another day to release the news of their return to China…

Visited Carlos Alcaraz’s academy near Alicante recently and spoke to the coaches - Ferrero, Cascales and López - who have overseen his rise from a gangly teenager to world No1... and still a teenager. “Magic”, “fantasy”, and comparisons to an F1 car.

The parallels between Emma Raducanu and Bianca Andreescu are quite striking: born in Canada with Romanian heritage, teenage US Open champions, struggled for consistency since because of physical problems... They play each other in Miami today at 4pm UK.
