This is the whole game. Donating money to a university can be more lucrative than investing it through other channels because the donor can reap their own fees when the university invests it with them.

I've updated my US university endowment charts to add my 2 ¢ on the circular-economy aspect of the Griffin g(r)ift: More than 50% of the gifts made by people like Griffin to places like Harvard are handed back, the very next day, to people like Griffin. It's a beautiful thing.

NEW: My latest examines how the #StopCopCity movement is adapting as the DeKalb County Zoning Board unanimously denies an appeal of Cop City's permit & as law enforcement & contractors continue to clear the Weelaunee Forest of both protesters & trees.

I love all my students’ research paper topics equally but one student is presenting today on Amiri Baraka & the League of Revolutionary Struggle, as well as the broader New Communist Movement, and I got a little giddy when I saw their PowerPoint slides.

Ok, but: Baltimore is literally full of such walls, still delineating white from Black, still physically separating neighborhoods and people. Let’s tear them all down.

A wall known as “Spite Wall” finally came crumbling down this morning on Hillen Rd. near Morgan State Univ. The wall, constructed in the segregated 1930’s, was used as a barrier to show where African-Americans could live. Morgan President Dr. Wilson led the ceremony. @WMAR2News

The Iraq war is passing from America's memory but not mine. I don't know whether we'll ever accept moral & legal responsibility but until a reckoning comes, the truth must be kept alive. Here's what I witnessed 20 years ago today at the Diyala Canal outside Baghdad. (Thread)

It sounds like the most highly secret satellite technology this leak disclosed—LAPIS time-series video—resembles the spy plane recording technology that was tested in Baltimore in 2020, probably with AI and signals collection added. Just a guess. Will be interested to learn more.

HB 824 is now headed to 's desk w/ the 11th hr addition of increased prison terms for gun possession pushed by Bates. As a broad coalition has been saying in opposition all session long: People will suffer unnecessarily because of this w/ no benefit to public safety.

In the midnight hour, they amended the increased penalty into HB 824. This provision will harm communities and not keep us safe. It will worsen racial disparities in MD, which already holds the status of 1st in the US in over-incarceration of Black males. thebaltimorebanner.com/opinion/commun

Military spending as a whole became more commercialized during the Iraq War. The share of the Pentagon budget that went to contractors increased by 10 percent (44 percent in 2002 to 54 percent in 2022) My latest for :

Some real insight into NYPD daily operations from this accidental recording of bookings at the Midtown South precinct: "I'm going to make my money." Very glad got this published on his way out the door.

A student who took my Social Theory class four years ago got in touch to ask a pressing question: Do I still use Rihanna's "Work" to illustrate what Marx is talking about when it comes to labor? They said Rihanna really helped them whenever other professors mentioned Marx.

this thread from a bond hearing of people charged with "domestic terrorism" at a Stop Cop City music festival is nuts. denied bond for having legal support phone number on them. extremely common (often advised as best practice!) at protests of all stripes
Quote Tweet
jesus. the next person is denied bond. being held against them is the fact that they had a jail support number on them. that's being painted as evidence they came to commit a crime, when in fact, it's evidence that we live in a horrifying police state

Such a good piece on the parallels between the "Gulf Cartel" and the Mexican military, which both sacrificed a set of foot soldiers after massacres, in twin bids for legitimacy while doing nothing to minimize the ongoing violence.
