Feels like they're buying some time on the watch until next year.

That’s fascinating. Given the rumors about production issues, case design, lack of new sensors, I wonder if Apple just didn’t punt with the Watch this year.
-
Seem that way. We will know for sure next year if there is a new look. Or the leak was false from start

To be fair, sharing a processor generation isn’t new to the Apple Watch lineup. Series 1 & 2 were the same processor (though that was a unique situation), as were Series 4 & 5, though they had unique model identifiers

Wouldn't be surprised if Watch7,1 is the leaked squared off Apple Watch that was originally leaked

It really looks like they scrapped the redesign plan later in its development… and change to Series 6.1 as Plan B. Guess I won’t be “upgrading” from the Series 6 this year.

At some point one might ask why it needs to get faster. In terms of raw processing speed, for current Watch functionality, does anything past around Series 4 even matter? The UI is responsive and it’s not like it’s going to show notifications faster or track runs any better.

Battery life improvement is definitely welcomed c.f. iPhone 12 vs 13.

In fact it doesn’t even get a new model number, it’s effectively just a chassis tweak
