It shouldn’t be hard to understand that the people who are super-enthusiastic about iPad are so because they genuinely feel it’s the best computer they’ve ever used, *despite* not doing everything a Mac does. There’s no agenda, no conspiracy. They’ve just moved on

(And for sure, there’s plenty wrong with iPad, and so much more we’d like to see. But that doesn’t mean we‘d prefer a Mac any more than we want a Windows or Linux box. iPad today provides the delight that the Mac hasn’t in a *very* long time, no matter how many features it has)

It would appear you have missed my point entirely
-
You had a point?

-
Yes. And since your reaction to it is entirely emotional I seem to have made it with you after all.
-
Uh-oh, you’re one of /those/. Cya

I wasn’t born in 1984 to see the impact of the Mac, but it must have been truly mind-blowing to still be the best thing ever to happen to computing according to the author
-
Also, anyone who uses the term “real work” generally worth listening to. My wife and MIL, both total non-techies, use iPads as their main/sole home computer. It’s not “real work” but it’s “real world” use.
-
I’m also married to somebody who doesn’t have a computer apart from iPad. It’s not uncommon at all outside of our bubble

-
It’s almost like most people aren’t developers or something

Don't miss the subtle dig at my integrity in a footnote that points out how the sponsor is an iPad app...that I don't use.
(Oh yeah, and the author doesn't get my argument either. But I'm used to that.) -
This made my blood boil.
-
The fact that he brags about how an iPod got him “laid” should tell you all you need to know about his integrity.

I want to love the iPad as my mobile computer. Just too many holes for me that I need a computer for (I.e. referencing a previous email as I compose a different one). Maybe that’s some of the frustration — they WANT to get on board, but can’t yet?

-
Try dragging down on the handle at the top of the being-composed email :)
-
I’m in the bath right now but you might have just made my day...
-
Works on iPhone, too!
-
That is awesome.

The weirdest part of these is that in defending the Mac people frequently swear that features that didn’t debut until as much as 25 years later were part of Finder 1.0.
-
And where have I done that?
-
Footnote 2.
-
System 1.0 had the Finder from day one.
-
And here’s when it got some of the features requested in the MacStories article… More than two view options: 1997 Robust date sorting: 1997 Tagging: 2013 Saved searches: 2005 .zip support: 2001 File version history: 2007
-
Are you deliberately trying to missunderstand me? You could have also listed that there was only ever one application open at a time and two files, whereever they were stored, couldn’t have the same name in the first Finder. That’s still doesn’t weaken my point
-
Your point has a fundamental flaw. Your not having seen the iPad in a professional setting doesn’t mean it isn’t happening. As a professor, it is — and has been — my primary device for research, writing, creating, presenting, marking, and classroom use for years.
-
That a professor of english should misunderstand my text so completely is baffling. I do say that whoever likes it should use it. I also say that anecdotes don’t impress me. My main gripe however is what this development is doing to the Mac…
