Cladonia rangiferina - Reindeer lichen Named that because reindeer make up most of their winter diet from this in arctic climates. I've heard some die-offs have occurred in rainy-turned-icy seasons because they normally rummage through the snow to find this. Ice was too hard.

The cool thing about lichens is, you can find them even in winter. It makes winter a little less depressing.

Amazing: a trail of termites (up) and a trail of ants (down), both protected by a row of their soldiers in a stand-off, without fighting. from

Pleased to spot these tiny Bird’s Nest Fungi (Crucibulum laeve). Each little “nest” is a fruitbody. The “eggs”, which contain the spores, are only 2mm across!
