There are not only many revisions to manuscripts, but also to book titles and covers. Here is a behind-the-scenes look at how designer @tyler_thompson and author @Lethain landed on the final title and cover for An Elegant Puzzle.pic.twitter.com/qKpucGrvgP
First, the title: An Elegant Puzzle wasn't the first working title for the book. (One draft title was Engineering Organization.) In @tyler_thompson’s first meeting with @Lethain, he flagged the phrase from a passage, finding it a keen encapsulation of the book. Here's the line:
“As I’ve become more experienced, my appreciation for management, and engineering management in particular, has grown, and I’ve come to view it as a series of elegant, rewarding, and important puzzles.” — @Lethain
Second, the cover: we originally explored puzzle-piece visuals and imagery of organizational charts. But we were soon set on finding a more meaningful and unique visual representation. We aspired to create a cover that would surprise and intrigue readers.
The next direction we investigated was systems and scale. We tried several compounding geometric patterns. Many worked visually but lacked the one thing @Lethain kept mentioning: the human aspect of management.
In early conversations, @Lethain often referenced wabi-sabi—embracing transience and imperfection—as being core to his thinking. With that in mind, @tyler_thompson searched for organic, living systems that had a structure that resembled org charts.
We ultimately landed on a type of Japanese red algae, which @tyler_thompson redrew from a photographic plate sample from the 1800s. The algae, like management, represents a living system that may not be permanent or perfect, but can be elegant and beautiful.
