    Lastly, for added impact, we matched the color of the headband and tailband to the colors of the gradient; yellow at the top, red at the bottom. It's a small detail designed to carry the look and feel of the book's exterior into the books interior.

    Next, we tested more than ten different foils. Red was the by far the winner. We loved how the red foil interacted with the light to create a dynamic shimmer and feel even more flame-like.

    We tried two version of the text overlay—one with just "Get Together" on the cover and one that also had the author names and subtitle. It was clear that making the title large and removing all other text gave us the warmest, most striking book. (Author names are on the spine!)

    Next, we focused on the title text. We used the Bradford Black typeface and kerned it in tight so all the letters created a snug, close-knit feeling. For even more emphasis on the type, we planned to experiment with foiling and debossing.

    Next, we explored options for layering a pattern and/or text on the gradient. Ultimately, we felt like we lost the striking impact of the gradient by covering it up. So, we opted for a very simple cover treatment with a small amount of text that would allow the gradient to shine.

    Next, we determined what pre-press settings would achieve the most vibrant gradient. We found that a 175 line-screen with some of Adobe InDesign’s gradient feather tools gave us the smoothest fade and avoided color banding. The image shows the progression in our testing.

    When choosing a color for the orange and red inks, we had to consider how that color would change when printed on yellow paper. You can see here how the fluorescent orange and red Pantone chips end up much darker colors when printed on the yellow paper.

    We opted for a three-color gradient with the yellow color of the paper as one end of the gradient, orange in the middle, and red on the other end.

    We started with the color yellow because it’s warm, inviting, and bold. Coincidentally, , , and showed up to our first brainstorm wearing yellow. We took it as a sign that we were on the right track.

    [Digital Colophon] All Stripe Press books are printed using offset lithography in which liquid ink is transferred from a plate to a rubber “blanket” and then onto the paper. This technique ensures the ink forms crisp lines and images. Can you name the book from this plate?

    [Digital Colophon] A signature is a group of book pages printed on a single sheet of paper. They’re later folded, trimmed, and bound to create the interior. Typically, 16 book pages fit on one side of a sheet. This is why book page counts are often multiples of 32; 2 sides of 16.

    [Digital Colophon] The endsheets are the pages at the beginning and end of a hardcover book. They are glued to the cover board and the first page of the book block. Stripe Press endsheets are patterned with our logo and printed in the accent, or spot, color of the interior.

    [Digital Colophon] To create any hardcover book, paper or fabric is wrapped around a rigid cover board. Stripe Press books use 80lb text paper stock with a pattered tactile impression. The paper is also dye-impregnated so that it doesn’t wear to white with use.
