    We ultimately landed on a type of Japanese red algae, which redrew from a photographic plate sample from the 1800s. The algae, like management, represents a living system that may not be permanent or perfect, but can be elegant and beautiful.

    The next direction we investigated was systems and scale. We tried several compounding geometric patterns. Many worked visually but lacked the one thing kept mentioning: the human aspect of management.

    Second, the cover: we originally explored puzzle-piece visuals and imagery of organizational charts. But we were soon set on finding a more meaningful and unique visual representation. We aspired to create a cover that would surprise and intrigue readers.

    First, the title: An Elegant Puzzle wasn't the first working title for the book. (One draft title was Engineering Organization.) In ’s first meeting with , he flagged the phrase from a passage, finding it a keen encapsulation of the book. Here's the line:

    Lastly, for added impact, we matched the color of the headband and tailband to the colors of the gradient; yellow at the top, red at the bottom. It's a small detail designed to carry the look and feel of the book's exterior into the books interior.

    Next, we tested more than ten different foils. Red was the by far the winner. We loved how the red foil interacted with the light to create a dynamic shimmer and feel even more flame-like.

    We tried two version of the text overlay—one with just "Get Together" on the cover and one that also had the author names and subtitle. It was clear that making the title large and removing all other text gave us the warmest, most striking book. (Author names are on the spine!)

    Next, we focused on the title text. We used the Bradford Black typeface and kerned it in tight so all the letters created a snug, close-knit feeling. For even more emphasis on the type, we planned to experiment with foiling and debossing.
