@stripe other than convenience, is there an advantage to using subscription as opposed to manually billing via rest API?

It's certainly convenient, but it offers a huge amount of flexibility which, if you're issuing recurring charges, will make your life much easier. Feel free to email us via https://support.stripe.com/contact for some advice on your use case.

But i have promo codes and such that need to be applied to subscriptions.. and i dont really see stripe has a feature that can do this flexibly. Is there any financial benefit to subs. vs. manual charges?

If you need to add discounts, you could apply a discount to the subscription: https://stripe.com/docs/billing/subscriptions/discounts#discounting-customers … If you want to share more about your payment flow, feel free to reach out at http://support.stripe.com/contact with more details.

not just recurring discount (i.e reduced every month)... but one off discounts, like free first X month. Can it be done that way?

You could set the duration of the coupon to be `once` and it would expire after a single use:https://stripe.com/docs/billing/subscriptions/discounts#creating-coupons …
