"We found that...socially disconnected voters were far more likely to view Trump positively and support his reelection than those with more robust personal networks." Insightful analysis by my colleague at

"One thing I’ve come across in my public opinion research is that the share of Americans who are more socially disconnected from society is on the rise. And these voters disproportionately support Trump."

"Republicans in Washington may have indulged Mr. Trump’s fantastical assertions, but at the state and local level, Republicans played a critical role in resisting the mounting pressure from their own party to overturn the vote" - good read here

It’s more of an age thing than a class thing on that front, I think. Again, the only thing I think you can pull out of the data we have is that the people who moved in his direction in 2016 and stayed with him in 2020 did so for cultural reasons more than anything.

My point is that I don’t think Trump would have just alienated some working-class people in the Midwest by embracing Medicare reform. He would have also alienated older, more affluent conservatives who don’t want you messing with their Medicare.

And we found that grassroots conservatives were least willing to embrace Paul Ryan’s defined contribution ideas for Medicare compared to other less-consequential things like private accounts for Social Security

We found that Tea Partiers were *very* willing to cut spending all over the place, but were not very likely to cut entitlements by raising the retirement age or using means-testing

When we regularly polled a panel of conservatives with YouGov for ConservativeHome in early 2011, we found very little support among all conservatives, including self-identified Tea Partiers, for cuts to entitlement programs

Of all proposed domestic policy cuts Pew polled in 2011 (and the Tea Party was all about spending cuts!), fewer Tea Partiers supported cutting Medicare compared to all other proposed cuts

But I think that’s also not saying very much. On Ross's hypothetical, Medicare reform, even Tea Party Republicans were more skeptical of Paul Ryan’s plans than other cost-cutting reforms.

I spend so little time on Twitter anymore that I came to this late but wanted to push back even more mildly than mildly pushes back on me! I agree with Ross that there’s good evidence that working-class Trump supporters are to the left of Tea Party era Republicans.

Great lesson in why extra effort and not giving up matters. Arizona didn't score despite their red zone start after this play. Metcalf saved his team twice - when you think about it.
