Progress is slow, but I can also now read/understand some tweets of Japanese people I follow, so I'm feeling pretty good still!

It's been a while! Some updates: - Finished the RRTK deck - Have about 100 cards left on the Tango N5 deck and will finish it this week - Been reading Tae Kim's grammar guide but the going has been slow - Mostly been watching JP Youtubers and Twitch streamers for immersion

Been doing the Recognition RTK deck and it's uplifting to see how much I still remember so far after making it to 980 traditional RTK cards before I stopped last year.

Embarrassingly have done pretty much 0 MIA in the past year since I got this new job. Had to rearrange my prorities with the job, spending more time with the fam, and learning how to play guitar, but now that things are more settled, I'm going to start again today.

Moved, started a new job, and my computer broke so I haven't been able to add new cards yet, but I'm still doing my reviews while waiting for it to get fixed. Currently at 980 kanji. 1k soon!

Watching gaming streams for immersion is so fun, and when you pick up words from the comments it's so rewarding. Saw the streamer talking about weapons, glanced at the chat and people are typing 武器. Warrior utensil = weapon? Oh, of course! Love it when it clicks together.

Told one of my friends who knows Japanese I'm doing RTK and she threw this at me to see if I knew what it meant: 未開封 Haven't reached 開 in RTK yet but I've seen it enough to know it means open, so I guessed "not yet open seal... so unopened?" and I was right. RTK is amazing.

Sitting at around 94% correct during my reps, but I looked ahead and the kanji get way more difficult, so I'm going to pace myself and make sure I have more focus on the foundations and active immersion. 20-25 is the recommended number, so.

I've done 25 kanji/day since then and now that I can compare it to the 35 kanji/day, I've found it's a much better pace for me. I underestimated how long it would take to make my own stories for the ones I didn't know. This gives me more time to visualise the stories I'm making.

Tried 35 kanji/day for the first week to see how it would go since I used to study Chinese, and could recall ~60 of the first 300 kanji (meaning and writing) when I skimmed the kanji and then the keywords before starting RTK.

Made a KLWP theme and switched my phone's system language to Japanese. Ngl, it's super hard to use now, but I'm seeing kanji that I studied on RTK and it makes this feel worth it. AJATT, right?

It's really awesome when you're writing a new kanji during a rep and you can immediately recall a previous kanji that's part of the new kanji, not from thinking of that kanji's story, but from the kanji just popping up in your head.

Switched my Netflix UI to Japanese, and suddenly I can watch shows with Japanese dub without having to use a VPN. Amazing??? B99 and One Day at a Time, here I come 😄

I made my first ANKI card on May 10th after spending an inordinate amount of time trying to figure out formatting after seeing Matt's visually-pleasing card. Up to 140 kanji now and I'm having a blast!

Found AJATT on 1 May 2018 via MattvsJapan's videos, watched them all, read the AJATT ToC, and got RTK. I used to joke around and say I learned Thai from reading manga, but it didn't hit me how true it was till I found AJATT. Now that I know, I'm going to work hard for Japanese.
